The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established with the signing of the World Trade Organization Agreement (Final Act) on 15 April 1994 in Marrakesh (Morocco), following the conclusion of the Uruguay Round negotiations. The World Trade Organization, which is the legal and institutional basis of the multilateral trading system, became officially operational on January 1, 1995.

Türkiye signed the agreement establishing the WTO in Marrakesh and became a founding member of the WTO with a decision of the Council of Ministers on March 26, 1995.

The Permanent Mission is based in ICC building in Geneva since 1996.

Ambassador Mithat Balkan, the first Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization, assumed his duties on 7 November 1996.
